Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) create a new relationship between the customer and the utility. The ability to generate electricity to self-provide or wheel across the distribution grid enables a customer to displace traditional utility service responsibilities. At the same time the distribution grid is critical to reliability and enabling any exchange of electricity across connected customers. The characteristics of the DERs, the infrastructure requirements, and the business rules will evolve over the next several years.
